Nureyev
A Film by Moze Mossanen

Nureyev<br>A Film by Moze Mossanen
A dance drama about the infamous Russian dancer, Nureyev provides a multi-faceted portrait of one of the seminal male dance figures of our time. When asked why a film about Nureyev, Moze Mossanen responded: “He was an individual who simply refused to do what he was told. His desire to express himself as an artist was so strong that he sacrificed a big part of his life, namely his country, family and heritage, to realize those ambitions. As one of my characters in the film says: ‘He was a stranger from the day he was born to the day he left. Only an outsider leaves a place that was never theirs to begin with.’ And it was this sense of a man fighting for his own truth that eventually shaped a script for this film.”

MOZE MOSSANEN is one of Canada’s pre-eminent directors of dance film dramas. His work has been honoured by many awards and shown around the world. His first dramatic shorts, Illegal Acts and Canciones, brought him to the attention of the CBC where he directed his feature-length documentary film Dance for Modern Times. The film was released theatrically, nominated for a Genie Award and won the Chris Award at the Columbus International Film Festival. Mossanen also produced a six-part television series based on this film called The Dancemakers.

Other works include The Golden City and My Gentleman Friends, both of which received Gemini nominations for directing and writing, respectively. My Gentleman Friends, a 72-minute television drama, was singled out by The Globe & Mail as one of the outstanding dramatic programs of the 1999 season. In recent years, Moze has created a body of popular and critically acclaimed work that has included a unique blend of drama, music and dance. These films include: The Rings of Saturn (CBC/Bravo!); Year of the Lion, a contemporary adaptation of the novel Dangerous Liaisons, which won three Gemini Awards and the Jury Prize at the Yorkton Film Festival (CBC/Bravo!); From Time to Time, nominated for three Gemini Awards (CBC/Bravo!); Roxana, an adaptation of the novel by Daniel Defoe, winner of two Golden Sheaf awards, the CSC Award for Cinematography and two Gemini Awards; Nureyev (Bravo!/CTV), which earned six Gemini Award nominations and for which Moze received the award for Best Direction in a Performing Arts Program or Series. In 2012, he made Love Lies Bleeding, the television adaptation of the Elton John/Alberta Ballet production; and Romeos & Juliets, a documentary about The National Ballet of Canada’s new production of Romeo and Juliet choreographed by Alexei Ratmansky – both productions aired for the CBC.
