Martha Graham is now woven as a central figure into the fabric of my faith … a saint and martyr in her lifetime. She gave her body and her spirit to the forces of mystery and gave birth to a series of physical truths that are some of the most beautiful, sculptured questions that the human body has ever posed.

And where is the dance in all this? The dance you dance, the dance I dance, the dance of our fathers, of the first men who achieved the vertical -- this dance is everywhere … in the gesture, too, that feels good for its own sake. And of course the dance of dances -- the act of love. Physical attraction leads us to embrace, touch, hug, shake hands. Mothers dance with their children. And animals and birds dance -- their energy makes movement instantly. The gap between movement and dance is narrow and highly charged with possibilities.

At the extreme end of dance is dance for its pleasure alone: folk dance, social dance, dance that unites communities, dance that unites two people, the act of dance when no words can match the moment.
