elsewhereI think the story of TDT is too big to be told -- it would have to be broken down into the separate lives that it consumed, reflected and illuminated -- so many lives, and love affairs -- all of mine have been woven through this river called a dance company. I have been through the white water personally and professionally often in outright terror, and I have known ecstasy and peace in their turn. And so many wasteful deaths -- Chuck Flanders and René Highway -- both whom I loved as men as well as collaborating artists.

The dancers are the reason I go to the studio -- their complicated beauty, their animal power, the challenge they offer me in every instant -- and most of all their unrivalled generosity in performance. When we have been in parts of the world where this [their artistry] is recognized, they have received the overwhelming response that they constantly deserve. We all live in the memory of those moments in which a great wave of love held us aloft for an instant and all of the hardships and slights of the past fall away like grains of sand. In those moments we have the confidence to recognize that everything teaches humility.
