Support the Still With Us: Stories of HIV/AIDS and Dance in Canada Project – Your Donation Will Be Matched Up to $20,000
We invite you to join us in preserving a vital chapter of Canada’s artistic heritage. The Still With Us: Stories of HIV/AIDS and Dance in Canada project seeks to uncover and share the untold stories of the dancers, choreographers, designers, administrators and their friends and family members who were profoundly affected by the HIV/AIDS crisis.
Still With Us: Stories of HIV/AIDS and Dance in Canada is a research and exhibition project that promises alternative and reimagined ways of reconciling with and retelling these histories of HIV/AIDS. It will highlight the voices, including the memories and experiences of members of the dance and performance communities and their friends and families. It also examines public discourses around bodies, sexuality, and dance; political activism; and the broader historical and social context of the HIV/AIDS crisis. The project includes comprehensive archival research leading to a major exhibition that will tour to Canadian cities, as well as a publication. The exhibition is curated by choreographer Christopher House and a dynamic curatorial team. To date, the project has been supported by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council.
Also known as Encore parmi nous: Récits de VIH/sida et de la danse au Canada, this bilingual exhibition has already been embraced nationally by museums, galleries, and performing arts organizations. With adequate funding it is booked to tour between 2025 and 2027 to sixteen venues across Canada.
For this project, Dance Collection Danse is partnering with The ArQuives, (formerly Canadian Lesbian and Gay Archives) and The University of Waterloo.
Thanks to the generosity of a dedicated donor, all contributions to this project will be matched dollar-for-dollar up to $20,000. This matching campaign amplifies the impact of your donation, enabling us to conduct vital research, realize design and construction plans, and share these powerful stories with audiences across the country. Your support will ensure that the legacies of these artists are preserved and celebrated, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of their contributions to Canadian dance.
Please consider making a donation to help us honour the resilience of our artistic communities and ensure these histories are not forgotten. Together, we can keep these stories alive for future generations and make the upcoming exhibition a meaningful tribute to those we have lost.
