VIEW TRANSCRIPTS OF TELEGRAMS

These two telegrams are particularly noteworthy to Canadian dance history. In the first, Dame Adeline Genée, who had come to Canada during World War II as an examiner for the Royal Academy of Dancing, congratulates her friends Gweneth Lloyd and Betty Farrally in Winnipeg upon receiving a royal title from the young Queen Elizabeth II in 1953. The Royal Winnipeg Ballet was the first ballet company in the Commonwealth to receive such a title.
In the second telegram, Royal Winnipeg Ballet co-founder Betty Farrally telegraphs her fellow co-founder Gweneth Lloyd to tell her that the company had lost everything in a fire that destroyed several buildings in downtown Winnipeg in 1954. Lloyd had opened a branch of their school in Toronto and was based there at the time. (Telegrams from Gweneth Lloyd Collection)
