On July 29, our community lost a giant of the dance world and we at DCD lost a friend. Danny Grossman was a passionate believer in the importance of preserving dance.
One of Canada’s most celebrated male dancers, Frank Augustyn trained at Canada’s National Ballet School, joining The National Ballet of Canada in 1970. In 1973, he and Karen Kain won a special award for the best pas de deux at the International Ballet Competition in Moscow
A groundbreaking Black Canadian tap dancer, Joey Hollingsworth swings fast and smooth. Born in 1936, raised in London, Ontario, he danced on variety, medicine and minstrel shows early on.
Curated by Seika Boye, this nationally touring exhibition brings over 70 years of Black dance and performance history in Canada into focus, spotlighting stories long left out of dominant narratives.
Three Decades of Dance. This digital exhibit is the sister to the live exhibit that ran in Vancouver’s Scotiabank Dance Centre lobby from October 21 to November 18, 2023. All 30 subjects shine a light on New Works’ incredible legacy in the West coast dance community.
Because dance was the fastest growing art form in Canada during the 1970s, 50 years later, DCD is facing the greatest demand in our history to care for the archival materials of the artists from the 1970s dance boom.
