Though born and raised in Winnipeg, Dorothy Cox-Scruton eventually moved west; her name appears in the 1931 Victoria, British Columbia city directory as the principal of the Western School of Dancing. It was around this time that she travelled to Bournemouth, UK to further her ballet studies and she is recorded by the Association as its first Canadian member in 1932. Cox-Scruton and her daughter moved to London, Ontario in 1947 where she set up a school that would operate for more than sixty years. In addition to ballet, she taught Revived Greek Dance as developed by British dance educator Ruby Ginner and was a huge proponent of the method as complementary training to ballet. The methodology emphasized improvisation, choreography, expressivity, and musicality. Cox-Scruton also established annual summer schools at Alma College in St. Thomas, Ontario, and at Huron College in London, and she ran fall/winter satellite operations in neighbouring rural towns such as Woodstock. In 1994, Cox-Scruton received the RAD President’s Award.
